Smart Health: Post workout nutrition

The postexercise “anabolic window” is a highly misused & abused concept. Preworkout nutrition all but cancels the urgency, unless you’re an endurance athlete with multiple glycogen-depleting events in a single day. Getting down to brass tacks, a relatively recent study (Power et al. 2009) showed…

WIW (2011-03-23) - Pre-vacation jitters

Wow this pre-vacation week flew by so fast… I meant to post this Wednesday and here we are Friday already.

Stats:
———————-
HW: 260 lbs
GW: 175 lbs (Attained on Dec 08, 2010)
CW: 171.7 lbs

I had a great week.  I did some speed work running Monday, a weight lifting full body workout Wednesday and a 5K Run at lunchtime today.  I beat my 5K personal record again today.  I did it in 41:49 with a 4 min warmup and by running at a tempo of 4.5 mph up to 25 mins and then doing some 4.8 mph intervals thereafter.  Foot felt great and nothing major in terms of pains.

I didn’t end up doing the 5K race last week because I caught a big stomach flew but I will sign up for another one soon.

Next week I’m going on vacation and I’m hoping that I can do some exercise overthere because there will definately some calories injested especially with the booze and food.

I think if I’m logical in my choices I can have a good time without feeling guilty about indulging.

Something that will be interesting is that I will not be counting calories for a full week.  I have been counting calories since embarking this journey @260 lbs on june 1st last year so I’m a bit nervous about this.

I should be fine… right?

Epic Workout!

Just completed an awesome Epic workout.  I ran a full 5K without walking for the first time.  I had to slowdown to 4.0 mph around the 15 min mark to avoid a painful stitch in my right abdomen but other than that I kept going at 4.5 until the 35 min mark.  After that, I intervaled between 4.5 and 4.8 until I reached the 5K mark @ 42:30.  This is a personal best for me so high five :-)

Thereafter, I did my usual balancing on my left foot for 5 min to strengthen my foot muscles and for the first time I didn’t lose balance for the entire 5 min session.

Double high five!

WIW (2011-03-16) - Upcoming 5K

I had a pretty good week all in all.

Stats:

HW: 260 lbs
GW: 175 lbs (Attained on Dec 08, 2010)
CW: 173.4 lbs

I signed up for a 5K this coming saturday.  I’m a bit nervous about it.  What if I’m the last person to finish :S.  Groing up that was always the case in Gym class.  Ah well I’m trying not to think about that too much.  I just need to go out and give it a try so that I can say I did it.

The simple fact that I can run a 5K when I wouldn’t even have considered walking a 5K this time last year weighing over 250 lbs is a MAJOR life accomplishment for me.  I would of had to endure so much pain in my left foot, it wouldn’t have been tolerable.  Now with the weight off, good running shoes and insoles as well and the work I’ve been doing with physio therapy to rehab my foot, the pain is down to a very managable level.  Which I didn’t know was possible.

So 5K this saturday, hopefully it won’t be too brutal…. wish me luck!

Garmin Forerunner 305 is in the house

Went for my first run with my garmin forerunner 305 and it is some nice!

I got to watch my pace and my distance. I’ve been running on the treadmill inside at the gym all winter but it was nice outside so I figured I’d put Liam in his bike trailer and push him around for 5K.  He slept for most of it :-)

I was surprised because the pace was pretty good around 5 mph even pushing the trailer especially considering that can only sustain an avg of about 4.5 on the treadmill at the gym. Nonetheless, it’s pretty cool and I’ll have a better idea when I get to try it on my own.

The HR monitor seemed to be off because it gave me a reading of 115 going uphill so I’ll have to keep an eye on that on my next run as well. I think I had the strap upside down so maybe that had an effect.

Enough said…

Enough said…

Downhill Ski

I had a great time downhill skiing last night with some buddies.

I’m so happy that I started doing this activity again this winter.

I hadn’t skied since at least spring of 2004. After rapidly gaining over 40 lbs during my house construction (Oct ‘04 - May ‘05) I didn’t really feel comfortable skiing anymore.  Now this winter, since I’m fit again, I got excited to try skiing again.  Not only because I enjoy it but also because it’s my wife’s favorite sport.

I bought some skis and some extra wide ski boots for my extra wide feet and thought I would give real skiing a shot.  I had only tried snowblades in the past and since I mastered those I decided to challenge myself with real skis.  I only bought short beginner skis but they offer enough of a challenge for me.

It’s been going good on the slopes, I made some nice progress and I’m getting more and more comfortable each time.  The work I’ve been doing with a physio on my left foot as well as my balance has been helping quite a bit.  I’m thinking it will help with roller blading and skating which I’m going to tackle next winter.

WIW (2011-03-09)

This WIW has a bit more importance because it’s been 3 months since I attained my goal weight of 175 lbs (Dec 8th, 2010).

HW: 260 lbs
CW: 174.3 lbs

In the past three months post weight loss I’ve been able to maintain a healthy weight around my goal of 175 lbs.  I’ve been above a few times but nothing too serious.  I’m trying to eat to fuel my activities which is a new concept (not feeling guilty of eating after a workout).  Basically I’m trying to balance the calories in vs out and so far it’s working.

Below is my daily burn chart for the past three months.  The trend is going downward which is good and my caloric intake is pretty balanced.

Next chart is of the past 9 months since I started this journey on june 1st 2010.

Keeping up with the exercise is the key thus far so I’m going to keep at it and also with the calorie journal since I’m not too bothered by doing it.
